Clinical Preceptorship

The Lactation Program offers individualized clinical rotations for licensed health professionals seeking in-depth experience in the management of lactation. Preceptorships are typically one week in length and are tailored to your specific practice setting and your current level of experience and knowledge in the management of breastfeeding. Participants must be licensed health professionals, such as: RN, NP, LPN, MA, CNM, RD, MD, DO, PA, etc. Mentored by the best in the lactation field, this preceptorship will enhance your clinical skills through practical, hands-on experience with both routine and complex cases.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn the in-depth evaluation of breastfeeding difficulties, including the essentials of a maternal and infant lactation history, breast assessment, infant growth parameters, and evaluation of breastfeeding.
  • Identify and provide appropriate intervention for common breastfeeding problems, including acute and chronic sore nipples, unrelieved breast engorgement, mastitis, infant difficulties attaching to the breast or nursing correctly, insufficient milk supply, and infant failure-to-thrive.
  • Utilize objective criteria, including results of accurate infant test weights, in the evaluation of maternal milk supply and milk transfer.
  • Become familiar with the indications for and the use of electric and manual breastpumps and options for feeding medically indicated supplemental milk to breastfed infants.
  • Perform telephone assessment and counseling for breastfeeding problems.
  • Acquire knowledge and tools to design a breastfeeding program tailored to your clinical setting and clientele.
